On satellite multicast to heterogeneous receivers

چکیده
We propose a framework for single-source, satellite-based multicast dissemination of bulk files. The framework trades off between reception delay and bandwidth usage and coexists with terrestrial background network traffic; specifically TCP traffic utilizing a short-term congestion control mechanism. The framework consists of two major components: 1) a multicast rate scheduling mechanism that uses longterm, end-to-end multicast packet survival statistics in order to deal with the bandwidth-delay trade-off issue, and 2) a fair queueing algorithm that regulates the points where multicast traffic from the satellite meets terrestrial background traffic. We show through simulation the performance of this framework under a number of scenarios.

Adaptive Error Correction to Support Heterogeneous Multicast Groups
Usage of IP multicast for the distribution of e.g. multimedia data to a set of receivers is increasing. Neither TCP nor UDP are suited for providing a reliable transmission, however, because they lack multicast support or (in the case of UDP) the ability of retransmission. The situation is further complicated by multicast groups that are heterogeneous with respect to error rates and delays expe...

We investigate reliable multicast communication over satellite networks. We compare a scenario where receivers can use a feedback channel to signal loss to a scenario where no feedback channel is available. We show that the introduction of a feedback channel is the key to allow for bandwidth-eecient, robust, and fully reliable multicast communication via satellite.

We design an effective multicast routing algorithm for distributing layered multicast video to heterogeneous receivers in networks with rate-based link schedulers. The multicast tree constructed by the algorithm fulfills the QoS requirements imposed by heterogeneous receivers both in terms of bandwidth and delay, and at the same time, consumes as little network resource as possible. For the pur...

Receiver-driven layered multicast has been designed to support scalable multimedia applications and very recently used to support bulk file transfers. Layered multicast congestion control assumes that all the receivers behind a bottleneck are equally able to subscribe to a particular number of cumulative layers. This paper explores the requirement placed on heterogeneous receivers behind a bott...
